Our
HISTORY
In 1964, racing driver Giampiero Moretti founded MOMO in Milan. In 1969 the manufacturing plant was established in Tregnago (VR) where the production of racing wheels began. These were the years of car racing and the beginning of the partnership with Ferrari.
“I am pleased to confirm that, both for Ferrari production and for my cars, we are pleased to install MOMO steering wheels.” Here are the words Enzo Ferrari from a letter dated 20 September 1971, addressed to Giampiero Moretti.
Production expands. In addition to racing steering wheels, the company begins manufacturing high-quality solid wood and leather steering wheels.
The diversification of product lines continues with the introduction of Shell wood technology. At the end of the 1980s, a partnership is established with Rolls-Royce for the supply of original equipment fitment, followed by Aston Martin, Citroën, Daihatsu, Fiat, Honda, Isuzu, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Opel, Porsche, Peugeot, Renault, Saab, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo.
In 1995 MOMO was acquired by Breed Technologies, a U.S. industrial group and a global leader in the production of steering wheels with airbags.
The company continues to achieve victories in major motor racing competitions. Giampiero Moretti himself won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1998 at the wheel of the Ferrari 333 SP. Niki Lauda, Jackie Stewart, and Clay Regazzoni followed by Mario Andretti, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, Michele Alboreto, and Michael Schumacher are just some of the greatest drivers ever to have competed holding a Momo steering wheel in their hands.
In 2003 the company was acquired by an American investment fund and together with other companies in the Automotive sector already owned by it, Key Safety Systems (KSS) was born. In 2004, Momo was sold, resulting in a change of company name to Key Safety Systems Italia. In these years the comapny began to work with a new material: carbon fiber.
In 2016 KSS was acquired by the Ningbo Joyson Electronic Corporation Group, giving rise to Joyson Safety System in 2018. The Italian production plant, based in Tregnago (VR), takes the name of Joyson Italia. Thanks to the know-how acquired over the decades and the skills of its workers, Joyson Italia stands out as a company within the group to produce safety devices for the luxury market in the mobility sector.
